From Knidus to Myra

The last documentary of the series starts in Kaunus, where, according to the myth, Kaunus fled in order to subdue his feelings of romantic longing for his sister Vivlida. The city contains monuments from various periods: rock tombs from the Hellenistic period and fortification from the Hellenistic and Byzantine era. Our journey will take us as far as the deserted Livisi - ancient Karmilissos, a town inhabited mainly by Hellenes and which knew great prosperity at the beginning of the 20th century.

The earliest mention of Xanthus, our next stop, is in the Iliade: Sarpedon, a hero of the Troiane War is thought to be its founder. The city saw a succession of conquerors, but it was under the rule of the Lycians that it flourished, during which three places of worship situated at the acropolis were built. The camera now focuses on monuments which reflect the history of the place, including the Sarcophagus of Lycia, a monument that represents many eras and bears the lengthiest inscription in the Lycian language.

The journey continues to Myra, a city closely related to the life of Aghios Nikolaos. According to the popular tradition, he saved three children from death and thus people of Myra, acknowledging his contribution, made him bishop and built a church dedicated to his memory.

We end our journey at Knidus. There is a disagreement surrounding its founder's identity, but it is clear that it was an important city with, colonies in Northern Sicily, from the island of Lipari, to as far as Naukrati in Egypt. Praxiteles' statue of Aphrodite, testifies to the cultural refinement of the city- the city which gave us Sesastros, architect of the Lighthouse of Alexandria; the astonomer Eudoxus, inventor of the sundial.
