The book ?People and traditional professions in the Aegean?, by Katerina Korre-Zografou, Professor of the University of Athens, and Dr Eudocia Olympitou, records professions that survive up to the present day and echo the local tradition of island communities. Many of these underwent various transformations or were even abandoned. The traditional professions, which for centuries were necessary for survival and self-preservation, still maintain their handwork-manual character. Nowadays they have been superceded by industrial standardized professions. Their survival is mainly due to the geographical isolation imposed by the sea. However, the long-term use of materials and techniques has created a wealth of knowledge and cultural wealth, with particular folklore importance.

A great part of the material was based on oral testimonies of the craftsmen themselves, which were collected for this purpose. The publication utilizes various written sources, published or not. The following islands are examined: Chios, Lesvos, Skopelos, Sifnos, Andros, Siros, Tinos, Kalimnos, Karpathos, Leros and Simi. Mastic producers and creators of scratched decorations from Chios, potters, shoemakers and musicians from Lesvos, marble carvers and quarriers from Tinos, bell makers from Simi, potters from Sifnos και confectioners from Andros are some of the professions that are examined. The book is accompanied by photographic material of huge importance and presents craftsmen, workshops and handicrafts in their natural areas.
